Red Tides In Florida

Recently in Florida, we've had a serious red tide algae bloom on the shorelines. This red tide organism is called Karenia brevis and it extends alongside 135 miles of the Florida coastline. One of the effects of the algae bloom which is causing huge problems is the fish that are dying in mass and showing up in multiple locations around areas like Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee counties. Another side effect of the algae bloom is its effects on the human respiratory system which has been reported by people who live close to the impacted areas in the northwest and southwest Florida area. The main organization that has been following this situation closely are the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission who has been giving out constant updates through their website.

Some may ask, well how did this happen? Very good question because all roads lead back to Rick Scott. There’s a reason why he was protested recently as he was leaving a restaurant. Rick Scott believes in cutting regulations and small government and he did just that including cutting funds for environmental agencies, scuttled legislation requiring septic tank inspections, and cut $700 million from water management districts to implement water quality programs. What has happened in Florida as a result of this careless legislation has severely affected tourism in these parts of the state with some saying it resembles something you would associate with the apocalypse. In my opinion this an environmental issue will most definitely impact the midterm elections and especially have a huge impact on Rick Scott’s race against current Senator Bill Nelson.
