Who's Watching Orlando?

Mass surveillance is coming to Orlando very soon in a new program called Rekognition who is connected with Amazon. This program is basically a system made to match facial recognition with a person of interest. Right now it is being tested on just a small number of cameras and the goal is to eventually have it operationally citywide to catch criminals, identify threats, and to look for missing people. The way it works is the program would scan the area and look at all the faces on the street be it someone walking their dog or leaving a restaurant their faces would then be placed into a massive database. This venture is a free partnership between Amazon and the Orlando Police Department. Justifiably many people have concerns about the program as a whole, especially civil liberties advocates. There are currently no laws to regulate something like this and some argue it’s a slippery slope further into a dystopian society. Jennifer Lynch, a senior staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation stated: "Everybody is a suspect, If facial recognition is becoming a new norm in the way Orlando is talking about, then we should all be very afraid." Also, one big flaw that many people bring up is there have been multiple studies that involve misidentification with dark-skinned women which could implicate innocent people. Personally, I think people should be able to vote on this before it’s implemented but that’s just my opinion. As more news comes out I'll keep you updated.
