The Devil In The Details

This is something that I find very interesting and it actually can be applied to the rest of the nation. Florida has 1 trillion in GDP but residents still are not getting paid enough to actually be able to survive. A study has been released by the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) project that stated 67% of the jobs in Florida pay less than $20 an hour, with 75% of those paying less than $15 an hour. This is below the Household Survival budget of $53,000 a year for a family of four in Florida. Just so people understand, Household Survival budget comprises a family's basic necessities, like housing, child care, food, health care and transportation. The 1 trillion comes from the financial industry which contributes the most to the state but only employs 2% of the population. Retail is what most people do in Florida and the average wage is $9.99 an hour which is $19,980 a year and it’s still not enough to survive even with both parents working. The wages have not kept up with inflation and remain stagnant and this is a major problem that you see on a national scale. So when you hear about these claims that the economy is doing well, understand that while that may be true, the average worker is still struggling to get by because corporate profit gains do not necessarily equal greater wages and worker benefits.
