Teachers Unite Against the State

A new Florida state law that is particularly destructive to unions has led teachers union memberships to increase tenfold. The law that passed back in Spring mandates that the membership of the teacher unions must be at least 50% of the district's teaching staff or the union runs the risk of being disbanded. According to Wendy Doromal, President of the Orange County Classrooms Teachers Association, “It’s so blatantly obvious that they’re trying to take down public education”. The funny part about this bill is that it is actually helping unions gain more members which we can safely say is an unintended consequence. But, the most interesting part about the bill is that for some reason, other unions are not affected by this, only teachers. The original bill included police, correctional workers, and firefighters but after much criticism was stripped down to include only teachers. The unions are gearing up to take the situation to the courts stating that it violates the Florida Constitution, and many Florida Republicans have dismissed the concerns thinking the lawsuit will not be successful. We'll have to wait and see how this one turns out.
