The three Orange County mayoral candidates County Commissioner Pete Clarke, Winter Park businessman Rob Panepinto, and Sheriff Jerry Demings debated on Thursday in Orlando to discuss why voters should pick them to be mayor of Orange County. One thing they all agreed on was a November referendum on a constitutional amendment that would increase the homestead exemption. What this would do is save homeowners money on their tax bills but could end up costing the county 25 million dollars in tax revenue. Demings changed his position on the Homestead exemption after seeing increases in local property value. All three candidates have different approaches on how they would approach the referendum; Clarke said he would drop in on community meetings, Demings is more of a visionary leader who sets the tone and Panepinto wants to listen to the people and humble himself before making a decisive decision. All three are very ambitious and want the vote of the people so they can set get to work on their vision for the county. The election is August 28th and the potential runoff will be November 6th if needed.
