In local politics, Progressive firebrand Alan Grayson is back in action and this time running for his old seat in district 9. But to take this seat he will have to go up against Darren Soto who is the first Florida congressman of Puerto Rican descent and who has been an advocate for the community in the wake of Hurricane Maria and the influx of evacuees to Central Florida. He has an uphill battle because the district is located in a predominantly Puerto Rican area. But on this matter, Grayson said “I don’t anticipate any problems, I have strong support across the board, in the Anglo community, African American community, and the Hispanic community as well. I could say my support [in the Hispanic community] is stronger than his.’” Grayson is a pretty controversial figure because he has been accused of violating Congressional ethics standards and of domestic abuse which he denies. The Democratic primary for District 9 is scheduled for Aug. 28 and it will be an interesting showdown.
