The Race for Governor of Florida

The race for the next Governor of Florida is heating up as the Democratic gubernatorial debate kicked off last week. The candidates running are Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, Winter Park entrepreneur Chris King, former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham and daughter of Bob Graham the former Florida Governor, and Philip Levine the mayor of Miami Beach. During the debate, Gwen was attacked by Gillum for her anti-liberal actions in Congress and how she didn’t support President Obama enough while in Congress. And as for Levine, he couldn’t tell the moderator how much the state spends on education and couldn’t name the Florida house minority leader instead naming the incoming leader who is set to take office. One thing to point out is that Levine is currently leading in campaign funding because he is basically funding his own campaign. While in contrast, Chris King has the least. Something also important to add is that Gillum is the only one who calls for recreational marijuana and directly attacked the criminal justice system for its thirst for locking up people on minor drug offenses and its racial bias towards young black men. For anyone trying to follow local politics specifically the governor’s race, I would advise everyone in the Florida area to watch the debate online.
