Trump has once again managed to shock his advisers, but, this time it's with something good and that’s the fact that he wants to pull out of Syria…well, kind of. Trump has stated that he wanted to pull out of Syria after coming to the conclusion that ISIS was thoroughly defeated in the area and by the fact that he saw no return on investment for the many American lives lost there. This move took his national security aides by surprise and of course, all of them opposed the idea and instead argued ISIS could regroup and come back to fill the security vacuum that would be created. After consulting with these advisers Trump decided to give the military till the fall to accomplish the mission. My take on this is somewhat split because I understand how these conflicts can become very greyish in policy decision making. On one hand, setting a time to withdraw and making a stand not to get into a perpetual quagmire is a good thing and great for goal setting. However, the problem is, what happens when the goal seems too vague? Like for an example, the top brass is saying to prevent ISIS from coming back, we need to stay. But until when is the question because how do you know when you’ve solidified the gains permanently? That’s the question no general can answer and you can ask the same for Afghanistan. At the same time yes Syria is unstable and gains are reversible and when you add turkey’s incursion against the U.S. backed rebels who have helped crush ISIS, this has diverted resources away from the ISIS fight complicating matters further. There are no easy answers but I will say this, some of those that are criticizing Trump for this issue love ongoing wars that never end and think staying in conflicts perpetually are keeping the homeland safe. But the thing is, they never consider the fact that the military-industrial complex profits from those same continued wars and a lot of times it’s because they are getting paid by them.
