The Summit of the Century

The Summit between President Trump and Kim Jong Un could possibly decide whether an all-out war breaks out or the official end of the Korean War. For those that don't know the Korean War has never officially ended and is still going on because the South and the North only signed an Armistice in 1953 which is not the same as outright ending the war. The meeting is supposed to happen in May and it will be unprecedented because usually, these types of meetings happen after low-level negotiations have taken place. North Korea hasn’t officially confirmed any of this and all announcement about them including the talks about denuclearizing have been coming from a third party source such as South Korea. And in reference to the denuclearization situation, I remain skeptical about Kim actually giving up these nuclear weapons especially without any major concessions like the withdrawal of troops from the Korean Peninsula. Also, some people seem to think Kim was pressured into this because of Trump’s firebrand approach but its worth mentioning this is something they’ve requested from past presidents but were ultimately denied. Michael J. Green, who served as the senior Asia director at the National Security Council (NSC) in the Bush administration said ‘‘The North Koreans have wanted an American president to meet with the Kim family since the end of the Cold War to demonstrate to the world their nuclear program got the American president to treat them as an equal.” One last concern is Trump’s style of engagement on the political stage. A good example of this is the trade talks with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau where he bragged about giving him inaccurate information as if that’s something to boast about. This type of unconventional way of political conduct may go well with his supporters, but, to do this during high-level meetings that involve nuclear disarmament and the balance between war or peace? I doubt that will play out well. This is going to take careful planning, being humble, and a great need to listen to experts and advisers with agenda setting and goals with measurements of progress. This is definitely something I will be looking at very closely as we get closer to May to see if it’s even going to happen.
