For those who may not know the Sahel is an area in Africa that deserves more attention because of the growing jihadist threat there, in addition, to some recent activity. French raids killed and captured over 20 terrorists and among those killed were 6 Al-Qaeda leaders of the Al-Qaeda’s wing in Mali, the Group for Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) including Hassan al Ansari who is a co-founding member of a previous terrorist group that has integrated into JNIM. The response for that was an attack in Burkino Faso’s capital Ouagadougou which targeted the army headquarters and French embassy in a suicide car bomb and an assault team attack which left 8 dead and 80 wounded. The attack was on the anniversary of the group’s integration of its many terrorist groups. This region is also home to the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS). This group is headed by Abu Walid al Sahrawi a former Al-Qaeda commander. This group is solely responsible for the death of the 4 green berets in that vicious attack in Niger. Tuareg militias have been clashing with the group recently and the French alongside these militias have been launching operations targeting the group with a recent attempt to capture or kill Sahrawi who got away in the area. Previously I have mentioned the Sahel because I’ve talked about the new Regional force of 5 countries there that are trying to formulate and get funds to tackle this jihadist threat in the region so the French can draw down.
