I want to voice some frustration coming into this because today is January 10th, 2018 and this is my first time seeing a trailer for this movie!
This trailer was released in July of 2017 and I feel as though it’s Sony's fault that adverts for this movie weren’t popping up all over YouTube and other places online. But, there’s a lot of other media that’s going to generate buzz.
Traditionally movies with black leads don’t do too well overseas as they do on American shores so the fuel for this movie will come from black dollars at home. Also, this is a black female lead so it’ll definitely be overlooked outside of America but you can bet your ass I’m gonna go out and support Taraji like I’m gonna support the cast of Black Panther!
Now I love seeing black leads and I’m overjoyed to see Taraji in the role of the protagonist who is a successful hitwoman to a crime family based in Boston but has to take care of a boy she orphaned after one of her hits was completed, which is wild! Usually I don’t like escort missions but we’ll see how this plays out. (Basically, she’s John Wick but still in the business)
I’m loving the direction of this project and it’s nice to see familiar faces in the form of Danny Glover. The rest of the cast is mildly familiar to me but I love seeing new actors getting their legs in a high budget production.
The movie was directed by Babak Najafi who’s most notable film to date was “London Has Fallen” the sequel to “Olympus Has Fallen” both featuring Gerard Butler.
I’m excited to know this movie is a thing and the pink-lettered, black background “Proud Mary” title card at the end of the trailer is giving me 70’s Blaxploitation vibes and I’m here for it!
Again I can’t stress, go out and support these black movies, you might be behind the camera one day and want the same support.
Proud Mary hits theaters on January 12th, 2018.
