The Broken Alliance

In an already tumultuous country like Yemen, you’d think the situation couldn’t get any direr, especially with the humanitarian disasters and the cholera outbreak. But, it just did when Former President Ali Abdullah Saleh broke ranks from the Houthi coalition over the weekend and was killed in the ensuing violence in the capital. He was last seen in a grainy video with a bullet to the head and carried in a blanket by Houthi rebels. Right now Saleh's forces are still battling Houthi fighters in the capital Sanaa but it looks like the Houthis have taken back most of the territory after at least losing the Southern part of the city. After his death, his son and the exiled president Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi have both called for revenge and for a continued uprising. Just to note, the Saudi coalition has been supporting Saleh's forces since Saleh broke ranks and now that he is dead, there will be an escalation of war spreading to the capital since Hadi forces are preparing to make moves to the capital. I’m waiting to see who will succeed Saleh who has been a major figure in Yemeni politics for decades but I got a funny feeling it will be his son who heads to elite Republican Guard. What comes next also depend on the loyalty of his father's loyalist who helped the Houthis take over the capital in 2015.
