Mugabe’s Resignation

Robert Mugabe the former President of Zimbabwe has resigned from his position and now the countries future remains increasingly uncertain. Mugabe has been in power for 37 years and is looked upon as both a tyrant and an African national hero. A hero for his liberation of his people’s land from white minority rule during colonialism and a tyrant for his oppressive policies that drained the economy and got rid of political dissent. Things finally came to a head recently when he fired his vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa to pave way for his wife Grace Mugabe to take over power. The military had enough and with Mugabe's own political party turning against him were able to stage a successful and bloodless coup forcing his eventual resignation after days of Mugabe’s refusal.

So what comes next you may ask? Well, more than likely Emmerson Mnangagwa will take over but even he has a tyrannical past after being accused of a bloody crackdown in the 1980’s which killed thousands and poll rigging in Mugabe's favor in the 2008 election. So his past should also be taken into consideration on whether Zimbabwe will finally become a place where democracy thrives or enter a new chapter of tyranny.
