African Americans vs American Airlines

As if driving while black wasn’t bad enough, it seems the NAACP is warning the nation about the dangers of flying while black. The age old Civil Rights Organization is warning African Americans about traveling on American Airlines in the wake of several incidents they have cited as clearly discriminatory.

The Baltimore-based NAACP has said they have witnessed a pattern of disturbing events by the airline for the last couple of months. A couple incidents even involved an NAACP official and another civil rights activist. They have said that those incidents and others that involved people of color “suggest a corporate culture of racial insensitivity and possible racial bias on the part of the airline.”

I find it incredibly alarming that 2017 hasn’t brought any new way of thinking for a large portion of America. I honestly find it hard to wrap my mind around the idea that there are still some who don’t realize that we are all in this boiling melting pot together, and African Americans (or any others that migrate here) aren’t going anywhere. I don’t understand why some don’t realize that the bigotry and racial bias they practice consumes entirely too much energy. There is so much racial tension being exuded in the world right now that I’m surprised we can’t use that to fuel our precious power plants.

The thought of having to worry about being profiled while catching a flight the same way it may happen while driving is alarming. The black traveling experience seems to be regressing. It’s wasn’t like we had made significant strides in our fight against driving while black, to go backwards is an angering notion.

If you remember in August NAACP urged against travel to Missouri after the state passed Senate Bill 43, “which makes it more difficult for employees to prove their protected class, like race or gender, directly led to unlawful discrimination,” CNN reports. The bill Missouri NAACP calls a “Jim Crow Bill”. It sets the state back fifty plus years in its legal and employment practices.

So our nation feels like it is moving backward instead of forward. Blacks still feel like they are fighting from all sides, and with each new case of discrimination we are reminded of a disease that just a few years ago, some were trying to convince us didn’t exist anymore. You’d have to be profoundly ignorant not to agree that the strong undercurrent of racial bias in the United States is a problem.

Well, either ignorant or just proudly privileged.
