The Boys Are Back

Technically they never left but the CIA is planning on sending in members of their elite special activities division back into Afghanistan to hunt down Taliban leaders. This is something that was previously done at the height of the surge in 2009 but in 2014 as the U.S. drew down forces, the CIA begin to refocus efforts strictly for Al-Qaida members and ISIS. But now since more resources can be freed up from the Iraq/Syria theater of war, we will now see more CIA activity in the region as Trump’s Afghanistan strategy gets underway. The CIA has lost over a dozen operatives in Afghanistan alone since 2001 and that’s because that’s how long the conflict has been going on there. With all of that being said, it remains to be seen if the stepped up CIA support would lay the groundwork for a turning point against the Taliban.
