At last, because I’ve been waiting to do this article and it’s been a long time coming. U.S. backed SDF forces with American air and Special Forces support have finally retaken Raqqa from ISIS. Now, keep in mind this does not mean ISIS is done because in Deir Ezzor they control pockets of land stretching to the Iraqi border through the Euphrates river and valley. SDF forces have turned attention to Deir Ezzor and the Syrian government backed by Russia is running a parallel operation there as well. The challenge now is what comes next? Well, discussions about whether Raqqa remains under SDF control or given to the Syrian government will commence and of course you have the cleanup operation where the U.S. has vowed to lend it's support. Another problem that will be faced is attempting to build a strong counter terrorism informant networks to stamp out ISIS cells who may try to come back and conduct attacks to undermine the new government. The new government of course is being run by the Raqqa Civil Council which is predominately Arab. So while this is definitely great news and pretty much ends the so called caliphate of ISIS, many fighters are still left globally and the ideology is still very much alive.
