After the elections of the constitution assembly occurred last week in Venezuela, we can now say that Maduro is a dictator. This new constitution assembly's job is to rewrite the constitution and the state laws. A big problem with this vote was instead of putting this up for public vote like a referendum, it was done by selected social organizations by Maduro. The most disturbing thing was the arrest of two opposition leaders Antonio Ledezma a former mayor of Caracas and Leopoldo Lopez. This new assembly has full supreme power over government institutions and Maduro wants them to implement sentencing laws like 30 years for anti-government agitators. However, we might be seeing the first insurgent response by what occurred on Sunday. Apparently a group of civilians backed by an army first lieutenant and Juan Carlos Caguaripano a former National Guard captain attacked a military base in the city of Valencia which left two dead, 8 captured and 10 on the run with weapons stolen from the base. On Monday there was a manhunt for the attackers and it’s also important to add that this assembly has replaced the chief prosecutor Luisa Ortega who was a government critic by surrounding her office with national guardsmen preventing her from entering her office with a loyalist Ombudsman Tarek William Saab and created a truth commission that will levy punishment. Things are heating up in Venezuela as the country slides into a totalitarian state and the status of the nation is pretty ripe for an all-out revolution or military coup so stay tuned.
