Gwent: Card Gaming Gets a Refresh

Collectible card games are the newest trend in the evolution of the free to play market and its easy to see why, many of the hurdles of their physical counter parts are avoided, chief among them being finding players to compete with thanks to online play.
However this rising genre is not without its fair share of problems, from complaining about payment models to minor gripes. Which brings me to an issue that I personally have with most online CCG's, most of them play like Magic the Gathering. Now Magic is an amazing game and unarguably the flagship of card gaming in general but most avid players are looking for something fresh online. The answer to this dilemma was to come from an unlikely source, what was essentially an action RPG's mini game.
Gwent. Ever since the CD Projekt Red introduced this sub game into their Witcher series it has garnered wide spread praise and has been enjoyed by the majority of those who played this extremely elaborate game within a game. It was a natural progression for this game to receive the standalone treatment.
Gwent brings a breath of fresh air to the online CCG sphere, the game has a very different pace, focus and mindset than a game like Hearthstone or MTG. Instead of depleting life points you are building your strength with the player with the highest strength winning the round, to win the match you have to win 2 of 3 rounds. The twist is that the game's card effects manipulate these strength values and you can't draw every turn, instead you have a lot of cards at once and need to plan carefully and be sure not to drain your resources. Sometimes you need to forfeit a round or trick your opponent into doing to win later rounds adding an element of bluffing and baiting.
Gwent isn't just different thematically or conditionally, the way you think while playing it is like no other card game I've ever played. It is honestly the best card game I have played since Magic, period.
Gwent is now in open beta and you can play it on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
