In the 1920's, a man by the name of Ivan Pavlov was responsible for the usage of an organized system of training the mind know as classical conditioning. In these experiments dogs were continuously presented with bowls of food while simultaneously ringing a bell. The period of time between the presentation of food and the ringing of the bell were extended trial after trial. Eventually scientists were able to observe that upon the ringing of the bell the dogs mouth immediately began to salivate displaying a subconscious connection between the sound of the bell and being able to eat food. This system made it possible to see how simple stimulation can be associated for a desired result that was completely unrelated beforehand. In the beginning, marriage was created for the sole purpose of recreation and through the passage of time it went from being a purpose filled union based on achieving some materialist en, into a connection based on the feeling of deep love and bonding. The values of this romantic connection has undergone many radical changes over the years. Society is us so in reality we can only hold ourselves responsible for the changes, however we have been known to create the spark that propels theses changes, even as the forces that be present the desired model behavior and forcefully make it so that everyone strives to be a direct representative of these models through the use of conditioning.

Sex, sex, and more sex

In any romantic connection the most commonly known way to physically show signs of deep desire for one another is through the act of affection, which at its highest point is represented in the act of sex. In the 1960's a radical change, which would later on be known as the sexual revolution, allowed many of the people of this time period to do away with old teachings that sex was designed only for marital unions and explored the option that it was an act that should be experienced by all who choose to want it. This philosophy took the nation by storm, and was the cornerstone for the counterculture movement. As our government began to take more control over its citizens with the war on drugs, they began to use propaganda to both deflect unwanted behavior, as well as promote other types of behavior they deemed worthy. With the usage of the technology available at the time citizens were drip fed images of what was right and what was wrong, in a method very similar to classical conditioning.

Flash forward several decades and the government has all but mastered this art of manipulating the masses with the power of suggestion. One of the major focuses these masters of manipulation adapted from the main source of the counterculture appeal was the acceptance of the act of sex. Elements of sex were being exposed in as many areas as possible in this nation and not only made the actual activity much more acceptable it also began to even change what we view sexy to be. Fashion over time began to alter the ideology that less material in garment was much more profitable and with the help of public appeal was able to further increase the desire of sex . One of the greatest tools of the information age was the widespread usage of the internet. What many people may or may not be aware of is that the internet is riddled mostly with pornographic videos and images. Pornography has become one of the largest businesses in the world, which really brought the term “sex sells “ to the forefront of society. Many different aspects of human entertainment and fashion have since adapted this philosophy, which could easily be witnessed within the lyrics of the most popular song, to the idolization of supermodels with barely anything on. Over exposure to these sexual elements was merely the first step in achieving total shift in focus to sex. Eventually, do to the exposer of entertainment characters raised awareness to the importance of sex, those whom began to idolize these characters began to feel as though sex was something they must achieve at all cost. Ironically, as we began to almost worship the act of sex and increasing its value, it also began to devalue each other. Sexism and objectifying has in toe become a social norm of our time and as such has taken deep root in romantic relationships in general. This making us subconsciously confuse the desire for sex with the idea of what love is.

For Love or For Sex

In a previous article, Love is a Battlefield, I had expressed the importance of an attraction on multiple levels (mental, physical, emotional, spiritual). Society has made it so that the physical traits of attraction be of the utmost value. In direct proportion to this kind of shift in conscious decision making love has slowly taken the back burner and being replaced by physical attraction alone. To top it all off what is being seen as physically attractive is even being manipulated by the same type of social conditioning as the acceptance f sex. This corruption has infected many of us and has made it difficult to decipher the difference between what we truly desire and what has been conditioned into us to desire. Self discovery is the only way to sufficiently be able to identify influences that society tries to place upon us and in doing so find it easier to identify what we truly desire. “Know thy self” is often seen as the golden rule in life and with the fact that life is always changing many find this to be very difficult but once you open your mind and are able to identify the external forces that serve to manipulate our value and choices we begin to act upon our own will. We are one step closer to obtaining balance between our own decisions and those of which society wants us to make once we are able to see we are being controled.
