Does Universal really need to make a shared cinematic universe?

Peace fam, BradBeGodlike here and this question hit me a month or so ago when The Mummy reboot trailer dropped.
For those unaware The Mummy series appeared on the scene in 1999 starring Brendan Fraser and was an awesome action/adventure flick that also had it's funny moments as well.
The Mummy was received fairly well getting 2 sequels in the form of The Mummy Returns which starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as the main antagonist this time around as The Scorpion King (Which also spawned it's own franchise off the success of this film)
If anybody has seen the film, The Scorpion King was a terrible, PS1 graphics looking mess with the upper body of The Rock and the lower half of a giant scorpion. (Me being curious I wanted to see what this abomination was called in mythology since everything usually has bomb ass names, but a half man/half scorpion. Well it's simply a Scorpion Man..........lame, at least half man/half fish have the name Dagon)
Mummy 2 was a great follow up to the first film and I loved them both (Disclaimer:This was before I got woke and learned that the real Egyptians were black and not evil)
There was also a third film in the franchise which I don't care to mention because the female lead from the first 2 films got replaced with another actress and I don't play those games.
Man I'm so off topic. lol
Anyway I loved these films and hearing about a reboot that kicks off a shared monster universe put me on edge.
Now I'm a nerd, I love fiction and I daydream constantly about amazing storylines, action sequences and other dope material (Don't worry I have content coming) and I'm a huge fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it's intertwined narrative.
While Marvel/Disney has had wild success with these films which have been very well done like the Captain America films (All 3 films thus far), all of the films have been met with the same acclaim (Thor 1&2 and Age of Ultron imo), hopefully Thor: Ragnarok breaks the trend of these films.
But a shared universe between the likes of Frankenstien, Wolfman and Dracula as well as what other characters Universal plans on dropping into the films seems like a great idea on paper but besides mentions and cameos of other characters, what is the catalyst that brings these characters together in what I gather is going to be their Avengers-esque team up movie?
At the end of the Avengers, Thanos is the big bad guy that funded Loki with the Chitari army that he took command of in the film which set Thanos up to be the bigger galactic threat. (He's my favorite Marvel character and I can't wait to see him A-Town stomp the Hulk's face in the dirt! >:D )
Adding more characters to the universe makes sense because all the heroes have a common threat endangering their respective homes.
So take the Mummy reboot for instance which features Tom Cruise in the lead role with Sofia Botella (Who was the only character I liked in Kingsman, she was fine and her scenes were the best) as the titular Mummy.
After Tom Cruise vanquishes her at the end of the film, where do we go from there?
Mind you she's probably gonna threaten the world and she must be stopped after 90 minutes of screen time and is used as a one off character unless she awakens the next character or something ridiculous happens.
My point being how far can we go after this? Say the film bombs, do you think Universal would still be willing to carry out this shared Universe plan?
I mean if they wanted they can include the Fast and the Furious characters to the universe, I mean Michele Rodriguez came back from the dead, why can't they be monsters? lol
Give me your thoughts fam, peace.
