Kong: Skull Island - Movie Review

Well, I have to admit I was wrong. I walked into this movie with the assumption that this would be a King Kong version of X-Men Apocalypse- a.k.a 2 hours of jumpy build-up a.k.a TRASH! But again, I was wrong and pleasantly surprised as I watched the story unfold. Typically, I have quite the low expectation for action movies especially in recent times and rightfully so. Too often are they either try-hard, excessively inconsistent, too long, or a combination of the three. ESPECIALLY REMAKES. AND REMAKES OF REMAKES. So

logically, why should I expect this remake/ expansion to be an exception?

The first 20 minutes or so were spent establishing the setting and character narratives on quite a surface level. While none of the characters were deeply developed, I don’t feel any of them were lacking. There were subtle layers that unpacked throughout the film that built upon each other and only aided in the overall feel of the film. I will say the tone of the trailer was misleading as it presented a generic cash-cow blockbuster that at most would be fun to look at.

All in all the film was extremely well paced- never had that “Is this movie almost fucking over” feel despite the length (2 hrs)- filled with some well executed shots and aesthetics. Now that’s not to say there weren’t some CGI goofs but it wasn’t anything to ruin the film. I also want to say I appreciate how the film established itself as not a rendition of the previous film(s) but as its own expansion of the tale. The film referenced two wars that took place (WWII and the Vietnam War) , both of which occurred sometime after the previous setting of the 1920s? 30s? Regardless, it still felt like the same old King Kong that we’ve all come to know and love. This movie was fun, and I would recommend it to anyone hankering for some cool shots, fun fight scenes, and corny jokes. 7/10.
