Now movie goers know when it comes to the X-men franchise, things are a hit or miss. With Days of Future Past we got a hit...And X-Men Apocalypse, miss...Now when it comes to Wolverine movies, things take more of a different approach because, well he's the selling point of all the X-Men films. Now what upsets fans about these movies is accuracy to the source material. Wolverine Origins (though I like) wasn't quite the Wolverine movie we wanted and it missed a lot of things. 2013's The Wolverine took from one of my favorite Wolverine story lines. But still, not the Wolverine movie we wanted, just didn't use the elements from the source material right. But on March 3rd, 2017 with the release of his latest film Logan (Inspired from Mark Millar's "Old Man Logan") we are at what is considered to be the last time we'll see our favorite claw retracting mutant. So here's the question, is Logan the Wolverine film we've always wanted?
Honestly...yea it kind is, and not just cause of the R-rating. Now hear me out, does it live up to its Old Man Logan inspiration? No, but its still good as a movie itself. The movie does not feel like a comic book, or an X-men film. There are no more mutants and it has no references to previous films in the franchise (with the exception of the comic book in the movie).
This is as human as we've ever seen Wolverine, he's vulnerable, he works a regular job (limo driver), he's loosing his powers, and most importantly he's old and he just wants to die already. Also In my opinion this is Patrick Stewart's best performance as Professor Charles Xavier. He is the one you care about in this movie.
Quick spoiler free synopsis, in a world where mutants are extinct now, Logan lives a normal life driving clients around town (Uber) and living in a desert like place in Mexico taking care of a very ill Professor X who along with Logan is seeing his health declining. Logan comes across a little girl who is wanted by a secret mutant breeding company and she brings a lot of crap (very bad crap) in Logan's life now he has to get her to the border of Canada and North Dakota...That's the premise. Its basically a road trip/man hunt movie...
Now one of the few problems I have with this movie (minor issue) is an antagonist, the movie really kinda doesn't have a villain. I mean there are people after them but its not anything they can't handle. I guess you can say Logan's sickness and age is the opponent in the film...And that's another thing (that I like) we're so used to Wolverine kicking the ass of anything that comes in his way. But in this movie he really doesn't have that much fight in him left, he's tired. Everybody he's known and love is gone and he just wants to pass. There are times that do remind us of what he's capable of doing, so were not fooled by his age.
It's a great film and I highly recommend it for none comic fans as well. I took my girlfriend to who hates superhero movies to see it and she cried. She loved it. Like I said is it Old Man Logan? No. Is it The Last of Us? Like everyone was calling the trailer, Hell No (Last of Us is better). But is it the Wolverine movie I've been wanting? Yes. I tell everyone Wolverines real weakness is getting older and watching the ones he loves pass before him. He has always been emotionally weak. Read the comics. And no movie used this element right until this, its like they were scared to show that side of him.
I give the movie an "A" and hope not to see anymore Wolverine after this, it ends well and is the perfect close to the Wolverine chapter and has a great set up for another character to have future films. Hugh will be missed.
