The Monster - Movie Review

I work at 7-eleven, so most of the time I'm by myself. So that leaves me bored 90% of the time, but luckily for me there's a Redbox outside my store so every now and again I go outside and flip through the movies. I came across this film with a horror cover, usually those are the worst movies to watch. I figured when I get off work I can watch this movie, now it is a horror so that means its got a 50% chance of being either good or bad.
The film is called "The Monster" (released 10/6/16) the movie is basically about a mother and her daughter taking a spontaneous trip in the night to drop the daughter off at her father's house because she's tired if her crap. The car crashes and our story begins...They are broke down in this car and there's a grotesque beast lurking right outside of it (I know it sounds cliché but hear me out). This movie could've been complete trash, but it is actually done correctly, here's why.
First of all, the mother & daughter do not get along in this movie, which is why the mother is getting rid of her in the first place. In fact through out the movie, it cuts back n fourth between present day and flashbacks on how and why their relationship declines. Which I wish they would've gotten more into, like tell us more about the dad and why she wants him over the mother. You know, just make us care.
Now the movie is very suspenseful, at times you can only hear the monster or see a quick glimpse which makes it very tense. For example there's a scene where you think something is gonna happen, like "okay here it comes, any minute now" then nothing happens, and right when you accept that, something happens. There is no gore (there is blood of course) or any false jump scares. If you flinch at any moment it will be because of the monster, not some guy tapping on the window or a random loud noise.
Speaking of the monster, let's talk about the whole center of this creature feature, the monster is at it's scariest when you can barely see it and can only hear it. Now eventually the monster is revealed and it kind of looses that horror element and you end up not being scared of it anymore, but for that first half of the movie in which we don't know what the creature looks like it keeps you into it and it gets very intense. The design is not bad, its not a Cheesy CGI monster, it reminds of the monsters from the movie Feast (2006) except maybe a little more built and always crawling.
Now for the Verdict, is this the best horror film I've ever seen? No.
Is it very enjoyable? Sure.
Its something to watch with your significant other on a rainy day if you both wanna get scared. The movie is not memorable, but it can be underrated in a way. Its good for a low budget Redbox movie, it won't surprise me if it shows up on Netflix soon. Check it out then...It's gets a C+ from me.
