Usually I’m not into modern TV shows (by modern I mean anywhere from the years 2008-2017). But this one really caught my eye, first off Drew Barrymore stars as the main character, honestly need I say more? But seriously I’m just blown away how this once seemingly washed up 90's actress has made such a powerful comeback as Sheila your average run of the mill wife, mother and realtor. Except for perhaps one tinsy plot twist, this "average” working mom finds herself coming down with a case of being more or less undead. And is now forced to adjust her diet accordingly.
Fortunately she is not alone in this task as her loving husband Joel (Timothy Olyphant) and her daughter Abby (Liv Hewson) are incredibly supportive and even helpful in this new endeavor. However, don’t be fooled by this rather crude description, this show is anything but 2 dimensional. Yes there is gore, but not the boo scary walking dead kind but more the Dexter with an extra dose of comedy kind. I find this show both light hearted and even touching at times as Sheila and her family struggle to regain normalcy in a very unique circumstance. Joel for instance as well as their daughter Abby finds himself changing emotionally in order to fulfill his wife’s need for human flesh and yet still manages to preserve his sanity somewhat. This is due to his ever enduring optimism that everything will work out in the end.

As my boyfriend and I watched the first season together we were both surprised at just how relatable and sweet the dynamic between Joel and Sheila was. I often glanced over at him and grinned or rolled my eyes whenever Joel and Sheila had one of those cute typical couple squabbles over trivial details or plans. But what made it even more comical and charming was the fact that the main topic at hand was anything but typical as it usually involved “dinner plans” and how to go about them.
I personally enjoyed this new Netflix original series and I especially liked the fact that the first season isn’t very long at all. I often times grow weary at the thought of starting a new TV show when I’m already swamped with several shows averaging 4-8 seasons long with episodes usually an hour each. But with Santa Clarita Diet I was gladly able to make an exception. As this first debut season is only 10 episodes and 30 minutes each, something you could consume in a short weekend.
Netflix has really been on a roll lately with these short series, dare I mention Stranger Things? Not to mention their excellent promos with their 90’s classic feel. Cake’s cover of I will survive was always underrated in my opinion. So if you crave laughter, savor gore, or simply want a taste of good old fashioned family values then maybe you too should consider trying the new Santa Clarita Diet.
