In a new development in the fight against ISIS in Iraq, Iraqi troops backed by the Coalition airstrikes have entered Mosul University and this is a very big update because ISIS used this university to make bombs and as a command structure so this is another step in retaking Mosul which would split the caliphate because Mosul and Raqqah in Syria are the twin capitals of this ISIS caliphate. So the goal is to capture the east side and consolidate before moving to the west to finish things off. The Tigris River separates the two sides of Mosul and this map illustrates what I am explaining to you in depth and kudos to Kami888 for creating it.

Now take a look at Mosul University’s position and how close it is to the central part of Mosul by the blue line representing the Tigris River. All the red that you see is what has been reconquered by the Iraqi military and the black/grayish areas is what ISIS still holds and this map gets updated regularly so more red will fill up the map as the operation goes on. A critical part of these advances are spearheaded by the CTS (Counter-Terrorism Service) forces that have proven themselves in the Anbar battles in the West of the country. They are followed by the regular army troops to the Northeast and Iraqi police with some army troops to the Southeast. As the ISIS defenses continue to weaken to the east expect sporadic attacks whether from behind the front lines through infiltration cells or diversionary attacks elsewhere in the country as the countdown begins for the full liberation of Mosul.
