Terrorist Profile: Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi

This is the first installment of my Terrorist Profile series where I provide info and background on key terrorist leaders from around the globe. The first guy we will take a look at is Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, the Caliph or leader of ISIS. This is a man who was imprisoned in 2004 at the infamous Bucca Camp and was a part of the sharia committee for Al-Qaida in Iraq; Bucca Camp was a prison that a lot of terrorists were sent to during the insurgency and it’s a place where a lot of future ISIS leaders were sent. He was released that same year and after the death of Abu Omar Al-Baghdadi the previous Al-Qaeda leader in a U.S. military strike, he became the leader in 2010.

Under his leadership attacks increased and as he begin to gain more power he broke away from Al-Qaeda leadership advice to not expand into Syria and created his own group ISIS thereby declaring the caliphate in Iraq and Syria and himself as the Caliph in 2014. Now, of course I’m leaving out a lot of information because if I explained every single detail and event surrounding him, this article would be super long. These types of profiles are to summarize a lot of that info so you can get an idea of who the terrorist is and why this person is being sought after. Also to add, Last month his bounty by the State Department was increased from 10 million to 25 million raising the stakes for his death/capture. The only other two people to hit the 25 million mark is Osama bin laden and Ayman Al-Zawahiri the current al-Qaida leader and another person we’ll take a look at in the future. As the fight against ISIS heats up this year with the Mosul and Raqqa offensives and after his lieutenants have been getting taken off the battlefield through drone and commando strikes, I expect him to be next in the near future maybe even this year.
