Monday December 19th will forever be remembered by the Russian federation as the day that their ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov was taken from them on camera for the world to see by off duty cop Mevlut Mert Altinas. However many people want to know why this man was murdered. All roads lead back to Russia’s involvement in Syria and while more information will come out to give a clearer picture on whether the shooter was connected to a larger network or just acting alone and disturbed, the point still stands that Russia’s military adventure led to this. This is not about whether Russia should or should not be in Syria but more about the consequences of such interventions.

Take a look at what happened with George Bush when Muntadhar al-Zaidi an Iraqi reporter threw a shoe at him during a press conference. He stated his reasons were for the Iraq war and the atrocities that came with it. Now these are two different situations and motives however they both came about as the result of foreign intervention. Russia supporting the Assad regime has been bombing with heavy munitions alongside the Syrian army the city of Aleppo to rid it of the rebels who occupied it. In the midst of this, as with American interventions, innocent civilians get caught up in the destruction especially with the Syrian army using indiscriminate barrel bombing. By Russia supporting this campaign, they have invited themselves to become a target and you can hear the assassin in the video yelling “don’t forget Aleppo!” so this incident goes way deeper than dismissing it as a Muslim jihadi killing someone because they are an unbeliever. Even if it turns out this man was working on behalf of ISIS or Alqaeda, still by upsetting their plans in Aleppo, Russia has made itself a bulls-eye.
